Preliminary Observations of Weak Three-Body Scatter Spikes Associated With Low-End Severe Hail

چکیده

he three-body scatter spike (TBSS), an artifact caused by radar microwave scattering associated with large hydrometeors, traditionally has been utilized in the National Weather Service as operational indicator of destructive hail. Severe weather warning strategies based on TBSS were derived using a lower-bound reflectivity threshold 5 dBZ. With recent WSR-88D workstation software and product upgrades, display very low value data to -30 dBZ allowed meteorologists observe more subtle, but meaningful, atmospheric targets artifacts. Since these radar-based interrogations thunderstorms over west Texas South Dakota (among other places) have revealed weak signatures characterized faint returns -14 A sufficient dataset cases does not exist currently support robust statistical analysis. Preliminary observations, however, indicate that may occur prior during low-end severe hail measuring between 1.9 cm 2.5 diameter, especially when recognized emanate from pulse-type convective storms sampled at close range Great Plains. These observations suggest extension current conceptual use conventional model, which associates traditional signature likelihood “very hail,” should be investigated.

Scatter of Weak Robots

In this paper, we first formalize the problem to be solved, i.e., the Scatter Problem (SP). We then show that SP cannot be deterministically solved. Next, we propose a randomized algorithm for this problem. The proposed solution is trivially self-stabilizing. We then show how to design a self-stabilizing version of any deterministic solution for the Pattern Formation and the Gathering problems....

Polarimetric Radar Observations of Hail Formation

Analyses are made of the evolution of selected polarimetric radar data fields during periods immediately preceding the onset of near-surface hail indicators [high reflectivity and low differential reflectivity (Zdr)] in two nonsupercellular northeastern Colorado hailstorms. The primary data were obtained from the 11-cm-wavelength, dual-polarization Colorado State University (CSU)–University of ...

Observations of oblate hail using dual polarization radar and implications for hail-detection schemes

Coincidental radar measurements and in situ ground-truth observations of large, oblate hail has allowed new insights into the fall mode of oblate hailstones. The effect of the fall mode upon hail-detection algorithms using multi-parameter radar is investigated and discussed, as is the vexed problem of extracting realistic rainfall rates in regions where hail and rain coexist. Observations prese...

Evaluation of Alberta Hail Growth Model Using Severe Hail Proximity Soundings from the United States

A one-dimensional, coupled hail and cloud model (HAILCAST) is tested to assess its ability to predict hail size. The model employs an ensemble approach when forecasting maximum hail size, uses a sounding as input, and can be run in seconds on an operational workstation. The model was originally developed in South Africa and then improved upon in Canada, using high quality hail verification data...

The Effects of Three-Body Scattering on Differential Reflectivity Signatures

Effects of three-body scattering on reflectivity signatures at S and C bands can be seen on the back side of large reflectivity storm cores that contain hail. The fingerlike protrusions of elevated reflectivity have been termed flare echoes or ‘‘hail spikes.’’ Three-body scattering occurs when radiation from the radar scattered toward the ground is scattered back to hydrometeors, which then sca...
